One year ago…

The Diamond Girls were formed.

We met at the OCW Summer conference. I was a newly appointed guest editor at a magazine, Nicole was a newlywed working for one of the state universities, and Jessica was busy with grad schools and plans of new adventures. All of us were wide-eyed with wonderment and had scads of ambition biting at our heels.

Nicole and I met in the bookstore of all places. We just started talking. Jessica was one of my roommates that week – we shared a mini-toaster over of a cabin, stripping down as far as we dared in the presence of strangers so we could stay cool at night. It was 105 degrees by day and not much cooler by night. Once all three of us met, it was like we had known each other for a much longer period of time.

We chased agents together, talked about speakers, and vented on how we would improve certain books/publishing houses. We sat in the river and cooled off – begging to be free from the heat – and somewhere in the middle of it, we became good friends.

A stranger came up to us and gave each of us a plastic diamond. God told me to give these to you, she said. To remind you that you are diamonds in the rough. I’m not sure why but I thought I’d do that.

And so the Diamond Girls were born. We’re like the Golden Girls but much younger – why wait until you are a sr. citizen to be fabulous? We’ve laughed and cried together, called men all sorts of names, and prayed for each other. We’ve talked about manuscripts past, present, and our future bestsellers. The women have been amazing.

So here’s to us. The other two are back at the OCW. I’m there…in spirit. Here’s to fabulous friends, the writing community, and growing better with age
