Beguiled {Book Review}

Reading Beguiled is like taking a walking tour of Charleston. The writing team of Deeanne Gist and J. Mark Bertram take the reader on a journey through some of the most luscious parts of the city with dogwalker Rylee Monroe as the guide. A former member of Charleston’s upper class, Rylee is now the friendly girl who takes care of the pets for the upper crust. When the wealthy need someone to take care of Fido, they give Rylee full reign.

Unfortunately, a cat burgler is on the loose, hitting the houses that Rylee has keys to. Jewelry and small pieces of art are taken while the owners are away and Rylee becomes the main suspect in the police investigation. Reporter Logan Woods is on the beat but soon becomes anything but objective as he gets to know Rylee. The stakes get higher when Rylee becomes a target of the police and a mysterious stalker.

I liked the pace of the book. There were times when I thought Rylee was a little dense but overall the character is believable. The police aren’t flat characters and neither is Logan. The writing is tight and once again, Bethany House has published a book that you’ll want to pick up and pass along to your girlfriends. Bertrand keeps the pace suspenseful while Gist adds believable elements of romance. I’m looking forward to the next title Gist and Bertrand work on.

Disclaimer: Bethany House gives me free books in exchange for my honest opinion on their books. I don’t have to write nice things about their books. I don’t get paid for it. I just do it for the free books.
